Alzheimer's Prevention:
How To Keep Your Brain In Tip-Top Shape
Alzheimer's prevention is entirely possible. The methods
are really the same as Alzheimer's
treatment apart from medication, so have a read of the
treatment pages as well.
Another thing that you will notice is that many of the
methods of treating and preventing Alzheimer's disease are the same
things that you would use to combat heart disease, and for general good
health.
In other words, fighting Alzheimer's will also help to
fight other chronic and age-related diseases.
Diet
It's well known that diet affects our physical health.
What may not be so widely known is that it affects our mental health as
well.
Researchers have found that people with healthy diets
are less likely to get dementia. Plenty of fruits, vegetable, grains,
and dairy products help to keep your brain in top condition.
Supplements
Food isn't what it used to be. It's grown on depleted
soils, it's picked green, and it's kept in cold-stores for months
before it hits the supermarket shelves. Because of that it can have a
lot less nutritional value than it should have, and so supplementation
is necessary.
There are supplements that are particularly good for the
brain, and for Alzheimer's prevention and treatment.
Antioxidants fight free-radicals which damage the brain
as well as the body. Two excellent antioxidants which are proven to
help the brain are vitamins
E and C. Not many people get enough in their diet so it's
important to supplement, and you need both of them.
Ginkgo
Biloba is another antioxidant that is good for the brain,
both for prevention and treatment. In patients with early Alzheimer's
it can help reverse or delay mental deterioration. It is a blood
thinner, so if you are on blood-thinning medications make sure you talk
to your doctor before using it.
The B vitamins folic acid, B12 and riboflavin help keep
the brain healthy, and it's thought the three together are especially
beneficial.
Omega 3 fatty acids are also essential for the brain,
and you can get it from certain fish like mackerel, sardines and
kippers, or from fish oil supplements.
Exercise
Exercise doesn't just help your physical health, it
helps mental health as well. Doing resistive and endurance exercise for
30 minutes or more a day at least three times a week can reduce your
chances of getting AD by up to 50 percent.
Exercise helps with blood flow to the brain, making sure
that it gets ample oxygen and all the necessary nutrients for maximum
memory and thinking power.
Mental
exercise is very important too. The brain is like a muscle in
that if you don't use it, you lose it. Mental exercise can actually
increase the number of neurons in the brain.
Playing cards, playing Sudoku, doing jigsaws, crosswords
and Scrabble are all fun ways of stimulating the brain. Learning poetry
is excellent and so is doing more study. There are everyday
opportunities to boost your brain such as mentally adding up the cost
of groceries as you put them in the shopping trolley, or learning phone
numbers you use off by heart.
The more you use your brain, the better it will work.
Other Things that Help Prevent Alzheimer's
There are a few things that may not seem to have much to
do with Alzheimer's prevention, but they are a help all the same. They
also help as a treatment, so here they are.
Get enough sleep.
Lower your stress levels
Socialize
Be productive. Volunteer or continue to work.
