Alzheimer's Natural Cure

Is there an Alzheimer's natural cure? Are there  dietary supplements, alternative medicines or other natural means of slowing, stopping or even curing Azheimer's disease? This page and the previous one explores the options.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is another antioxidant, this time from the Chinese ginkgo biloba tree. It has been used by traditional healers for many years to enhance mental alertness. It also helps blood circulation.

A comparison of studies has shown that the ginkgo biloba extract EGB 761 had similar benefits as Cognex, Aricept, and Exelon for mild to moderate AD sufferers. The best known study in the US, done over a 52 week period, showed EGB is safe, that it appears to be able to stabilize and in some cases improve cognitive performance.

Ginkgo Biloba does act as a blood thinner so dosages of other blood thinning agents may need to be reduced.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

Coenzyme Q10 has been found to delay the progression of Parkinson's disease by up to 44%, but it does not seem to improve the functioning of AD patients.

Coral Calcium

Coral Calium is a calcium supplement with the addition of crushed shells of sea creatures and it has been touted as a miracle cure. The FDA has denounced it as a ruse, and research does not support its maker's claims.

Huperzine A

Huperzine A is an ancient Chinese remedy with Chemical properties similar to the FDA approved Alzheimer's drugs. Studies are being done on it to determine its effectiveness in treating less severe cases of AD, but at this stage the FDA recommends caution when taking it, particularly in conjunction with other Alzheimer's drugs.

Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine is a building block of neurons in the brain and it was thought that using supplements could reverse the disease in Alzheimer's sufferers. Studies using phosphatidylserine from cow neurons were halted at the outbreak of the mad cow disease and research has only started again recently. More studies will have to be done before it can be considered a viable treatment.

Choline/Lecithin

Choline and compounds that are derived from it such as lecithin are involved in cell signalling, nerve impulse transmission, fat metabolism and cell wall membranes. It was thought that choline could help the memory, but studies haven't shown any benefit to Alzheimer's sufferers.

Tests with choline supplementation of mothers of unborn rats, as well as baby rats has shown improved spatial memory months after the choline was discontinued, but it isn't known how that would translate to humans.

Vinpocetine

Vinpocetine is derived from the periwinkle plant. It increases blood flow to the brain and improves circulation. It has been shown to improve cognitive impairment after prolonged use.

Your Food

What you eat can increase or decrease your chances of getting AD. Diets high in saturated fat and cholesterol increase the risk of dementia, while eating fish reduces the risk.

Having a diet that is calorie restricted, high in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimers by 30 to 50 percent.

There was nothing said about how the diet affects people already suffering from Alzheimer's.

Exercise

Exercise comprising resistive and endurance exercise for 30 minutes or more a day at least three times a week can reduce your chances of getting AD by up to 50 percent. Again, there were no figures to say how it helps people already suffering.

Remember to always discuss natural treatments and dietary supplements with your doctor to ensure they are safe and don't affect other treatment.

More Info: One of the best books I've come across for natural treatments of Alzheimer's is Frank Mangano's The Mind Killer Defense.    It's a downloadable e-book that is quite cheaply priced.

Frank Mangano is a medical researcher and he gives a lot of information on nutrients, vitamins, minerals, exercise, and a whole lot more in the way of a natural treatment for Alzheimer's.
